VBS.CoolNotepad is an email worm that is created using the VBScript. VBS.CoolNotepad will infect Windows 98 and Windows 2000 systems. Windows 95 and Windows NT users also can be affected if the Visual Basic scripting is enabled. The worm comes through a MIRC chat session or as an email attachment with the VBS extension. When attachment is opened the worm launches itself by creating

COOL_NOTEPAD_DEMO.TXT.vbs under C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and modifes the registry in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\windows\Current Version\Run

It creates a MIRC chat script to open an active chat session automatically and connects to #virus channel. At the time of connection it would send a message with subject "Cool Notepad Demo" and later the infected script when another user joins the session. It automatically sends mail with the infected file as an attachment, bearing the above subject and the contents being

"Hey check out this text file I sent it will do something neat in notepad. Enjoy :-)"

to recipients found in the addressbook.

The VBS.CoolNotepad worm first appeared in May 2000.
