Navidad Worm

Information about the Navidad Worm:

Navidad is a rapidly spreading email worm through MS-Outlook. This worm infects Windows 95/98 and Windows NT/2000 computers.

The worm comes through an email attachment with the message having the title Re with an attachment NAVIDAD.EXE. Executing the attachment launches the worm and displays the message box UI. It places a blue eyed icon in the system tray of Windows. It copies Winsvrc.vxd into SYSTEM directory. Worm modifies Registry at the following locations by inserting WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WINSVRC.EXE (Under Windows 95/98) and WINNT\SYSTEM32\WINSVRC.EXE (Under Windows NT/2000).

HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\exefile\shell\open\command

Worm also modifies the registry at the following locations:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

After the successfull installation, worm attempts to send itself out as an email attachment. It achieves this by responding to messages in the INBOX.

Navidad worm first appeared in November 2000.
